Units destined for deployment to Afghanistan go through a training programm that sets individual skills upto batallion level. Units rarely deploy organic, meaning they get added so-called enablers from different units, from individuals to complete platoons. Once in Afghanistan they must be able to operate as a single unit, know of each others capabilities. A cold weather, mountain terrain training by Dutch army Commando's brought me to Northern Norway. Not to do a story on the exercise, but to photograph the men in snowy conditions. The unit and it's support element had made several Hardened Aircraft Shelters (or HAS in NATO terms) their home for almost six weeks.
